New library mural in Enfield sparks controversy

The new coloured side wall of the Central Library in Enfield

The Council has commissioned a new mural on the west flank wall of the Central Library extension in Enfield Town. According to the Council the artwork has been delivered as part of the Enfield Town Liveable Neighbourhoods project and will be part of the Enfield Town Art Trail. The new mural by artist Agwa is inspired by John Keats’ poem ‘To Autumn’ and celebrates the town centre’s literary heritage and its connection to nature.

However, the mural is not liked by all and a petition has been started by Councillor Chris Dey (Grange Park Ward). He says [the] mural, lacking any harmony with the building’s original design, detracts from the library’s architectural beauty. Recognised and honoured for its design, the library should remain unmarred by any alteration that diminishes its value. You can find the petition at change.org.
