Council launches major consultation on Enfield Town improvements

The recent changes in Enfield Town at the western end around Library Green were the first phase of improvements. Now the Council has announced a major consultation on the second stage. Full details can be found on the Council’s website.

This is a very wide-ranging set of proposals. Some examples include:

  • Significant new cycle lanes added including new ‘bus borders’ (where the cycle lane is between the bus stop and the pavement) outside Lidl/Iceland in Cecil Road and in London Road
  • Changes to the New River Loop Car Park, including access to the car park to be from Southbury Road only. Access to St Andrew’s Road (past the car park access point) will be for emergency vehicles only. Access for people walking and cycling will continue to be permitted.
  • Introducing a dedicated pick-up/drop-off point outside the Enfield Town Station Plaza
  • Widening the existing crossing outside the Market Square
  • Improving and relocating the crossings on London Road and Genotin Road
  • Introduction of a 24hr bus lane on a section of Church Street permitting buses, taxis, motorcyclists and cyclists
  • Re-adjusting the position of two disabled bays on Sarnesfield Road to allow better access
  • Introducing a 3hr stay limit to the existing disabled bays on Sarnesfield Road
  • Merging bus stops on Cecil Road (removing the 329 stop) and moving the bus stop at Fountain Island (W8 London Road/Enfield Town Station) to outside Poundland
  • introducing a Red Route along Church Street
The plaza outside Enfield Town station is one of several areas to be improved in the Town

There is a draft traffic order TG52/1587 covering the changes and residents can make a representation or objection through the statutory consultation process.

Market Square

In earlier proposals the Council wanted to make changes to the historic Market Square, including removing the cobbles and re-surfacing it. It is now reported that the Enfield Old Charitable Trust, who own the Square, have decided that the Square will not form part of the Council’s project. The Square will retain its market and car park and the Council are looking at the space between it and Church Street.

The Council are asking for feedback on the Market Square area by taking part in a survey: https://letstalk.enfield.gov.uk/enfieldtown/surveys/enfieldtownphase2
