The Enfield Society photograph collection

Enfield Town, east side, 1868, showing the Nag's Head inn
Southbury Road (or Bury Lane) is the narrow road to the left of the Nag's Head public house in the left centre of the picture. The Nag's Head has a sign reading "CHARRINGTON, HEAD & Co. ENTIRE". The sign on the building to its left appears to read "RAILWAY COFFEE HOUSE" (though this is not clear on the photograph). Note the condition of the road.

For a discussion of the meaning of "entire" beer, see Fredrick Accum: A treatise on adulterations of food, 1820.
