Fountain and fire escape ladder
The fire escape was secured by a chain and padlock. The key was kept at the police station in London Road. "It was found convenient to keep the fire-escape there until the advent of the trams [1909] created the opportunity for the local lads to get a laugh by pushing the apparatus against the overhead wires ..." - [i]History of Enfield[/i] vol.2, p.39
