In this picture taken from the rear car park looking towards the lower entrance to Hilly Fields shows the small fence which marked off an area where the Council ran a putting green. Many a game was played there over the 18 holes which cost the princely sum of 3d or about 1p in new money. To the right of the Rose and Crown looking from the road there used to be a shop which I think was called Gaylers where we used to purchase ice cream wafers for 3d and even an ice lollypop for 1d. The shop closed, but I see in one of the photographs eventually became an "off licence". When you walked through the door of the shop a lovely bell tinkled to announce your presence. Just one more aspect of a wonderful post war childhood spent growing up in Hillside Crescent.
