The Enfield Society photograph collection

Ha'penny Bridge, about 1914
Inscribed on rear: "Fisherman's Cottage nr. Chingford Old Church. Mrs [and] Mr Mullins last occupier. Now demolished by M.W.B. [Metropolitan Water Board]. Public footpath from Edmonton to Chingford over the bridge. The writer is standing on the bridge with a mac under his arm. Wm. Austin"

Donated by Marjorie Pratt, 1995. Draft reply to her, apparently by David Pam, reads "... It shows the ha'penny bridge which lay on the footpath from Picketts Lock at Edmonton to Chingford Old Church, then in ruins but since restored. The bridge was a favourite resort when I was a chile, especially on B M Ms [Bank Holiday Mondays]. Boys swam in the river there and a number were drowned. It was, as the name implies, once a toll bridge, and the cottage housed the toll collector. The EPS is most pleased to add the photo to its collection."
