Wooden fence before improvement. Exhibition caption for this image reads "The Crown and Horseshoes through a gap in the high close-boarded fencing. Both public house and cottages are half hidden and the fencing gives the whole area a dark, neglected air. The drab rendering of the Crown and Horseshoes is dull and forbidding".
