Fortescue Villas, 13 and 15 Gentleman's Row
|
Built in the 1840s on the site of an ancient large timber-framed house (probably c.15) called Fortescue Hall (demolished 1813), from which they derive their name, these two large houses have been divided horizontally into four spacious flats. At the turn of the last century they housed a school before becoming a children's home. Strong featured, with bracketed eaves and a slate roof set above sash windows with cambered heads, keystones and slatted external shutters. There are canted bays of brick at ground and basement level. The c.19 cast iron railings with ball and spike finials are also listed. - Treasures of Enfield
