Talk by Richard Thomas for the Inland Waterways Association. The former Royal Gunpowder Mills site at Waltham Abbey is rich in history, designated a Scheduled Monument, the highest protection that can be given to a historic site. There are 20 listed buildings at the site. The Spring 2020 edition of Meridian Cuttings contained an article about the Waterways of the Mills based on Richard’s excellent history of the site. As with so many important historical sites the future of the Mills is now uncertain due to lack of income during the Covid-19 pandemic. It would be a tragedy if this site had to close and hopefully we can campaign for funding to keep it going for many years to come.
