Orchestrion, by Imhof and Mukle
|
This mechanical musical instrument in a wooden cabinet appears to be made by Imhof & Mukle (the name plate is just distinguishable). The firm was established in 1874 in the Black Forest region of Germany, and they later had a showroom in New Oxford Street, London. The music was recorded as pins on large cylinders, and 28 of these can be seen in the adjoining cabinet. Such instruments were produced towards the end of the 19th century, preceding those which used punched paper rolls and before phonographs and gramophones became available.
This appears to be in a schoolroom. The picture came from an Enfield photographer, so there is a good chance that it was in Enfield. Does anyone remember this instrument, or recognize the room? The distinctive cornice might still exist.
